Pick of the Bunch is my studio based floral design business where I get to do what I love. As a qualified Florist I create quality, fresh custom designs for my valued clients and lucky recipients. I began the business in 2010, choosing a home based studio business model. This gives me freedom from the pressures and costs of overheads in a retail environment.
At the heart of my business is caring customer service. People crave the personal touch, so I express my work through my values, which are; relational, reliable, resourceful, and real. The best part for me is connecting people’s emotions to the beauty and softness of flowers. It speaks to the heart, and reaches people in their moment of joy or grief. When I deliver the wedding bouquets to my brides, seeing the joy on their faces is my reward for the work I put into the designs.
The bulk of my work is for wedding flowers, which mainly comes through word of mouth and referrals. I’m thankful to be part of a couple’s wedding day and help them achieve their vision for their wedding theme. Also as a preferred supplier, I create and deliver get well flowers to patients in the local hospital.
Throughout the year I run intimate workshops in my floral studio. It’s a great way to bring people together to have fun, and a chance to educate them on flower care and design skills. It’s important that people see the skills and time that goes into constructing a floral arrangement using the principles and elements of design, and the technical skills in wiring. My dream is to see the Australian public value flowers and Florists more highly, and experience the beauty of flowers in everyday life, not just special occasions.
For my professional development, I have completed Certificate III in floristry, and take part in workshops led by highly regarded industry peers. This keeps my skills honed and feeds my creative appetite. My latest area of interest is Ikebana, the ancient Japanese art of floral arranging, also known as Sogetsu. I’m excited to be taking part in an Ikebana class very soon in Kyoto as we head off for our Japan holiday. Another favourite design form is asymmetrical. I also love working with natives in any form. They are so forgiving in our sub-tropical climate, and compliment ornamentals beautifully.
